Fleet Telematics and EPDM Weatherstrip: Using Remote Monitoring to Track Seal Health

2026-09-23

Fleet telematics has changed trucking. Every truck reports its location, speed, fuel use, and engine health in real time. But door seals are invisible to telematics. Or are they? There are indirect ways to track EPDM weatherstrip health from the data stream. For a box truck door seal, a shipping container door weatherstrip, a refrigerated truck and reefer door seal, and a passenger car and commercial vehicle door rubber weatherstrip, telematics can flag problems before they become failures.

The first signal is fuel consumption. If a truck's fuel economy drops suddenly, and the engine is fine, the problem may be aerodynamic drag from a leaking box truck door seal. Telematics compares fuel use across the fleet. A truck that suddenly uses more fuel may have a door problem.

The second signal is HVAC runtime. If the AC runs longer than expected, the cab may be leaking. The temperature sensor data shows the HVAC working harder. A leaking EPDM weatherstrip means the AC runs more.

The third signal is reefer runtime. On a refrigerated truck and reefer, the reefer fuel use is tracked. If the reefer runs more than expected, the gasket may be leaking. Telematics flags it.

The fourth signal is cargo temperature. Data loggers in the cargo area show temperature. A spike in temperature may mean the reefer door seal failed.

The fifth signal is door open close cycles. Sensors on the door count cycles. More cycles mean more wear on the EPDM weatherstrip. When a door reaches its cycle count, schedule inspection.

The takeaway is that telematics cannot see the seal directly, but it can see the symptoms. Use the data to flag trucks for inspection. The EPDM weatherstrip still needs a visual check, but telematics tells you which truck to look at.
