Food-Grade EPDM Weatherstrip: Certification Requirements for Reefer Door Seals

2026-09-23

When the cargo is food, every material that touches it must be certified. A refrigerated truck and reefer door seal sits right at the boundary. It touches the cold air. It touches condensation. It is near the food. The EPDM weatherstrip must not leach chemicals. It must meet food-contact regulations. For a box truck door seal, a shipping container door weatherstrip, a refrigerated truck and reefer door seal, and a passenger car and commercial vehicle door rubber weatherstrip, food-grade certification is a requirement when carrying food.

The main certifications are FDA in the United States, EU 1935/2004 in Europe, and national equivalents. The EPDM compound must pass migration tests. It must not transfer harmful substances to food.

For a refrigerated truck and reefer door seal, this is critical. The gasket is inside the reefer box. It touches the cold, humid air. Food may touch it directly. The gasket must be food-grade.

For a shipping container door weatherstrip carrying food, the same requirement applies. The seal must not contaminate the cargo.

For a box truck door seal carrying non-food cargo, food-grade is not required. But if the truck sometimes carries food, use food-grade seals.

For a passenger car and commercial vehicle door rubber weatherstrip, food-grade is not relevant. The cabin does not carry food.

When buying a reefer gasket, ask the supplier for the food-contact certificate. Ask which regulation it meets. A reputable supplier will provide it.

The takeaway is that food-grade EPDM weatherstrip is required for food transport. Do not skip the certification. It protects the cargo and your company.
