Reactive maintenance replaces parts when they fail. Preventive maintenance replaces them on a schedule. Predictive maintenance replaces them when the data says they are about to fail. For EPDM weatherstrip, predictive maintenance is the next step. For a box truck door seal, a shipping container door weatherstrip, a refrigerated truck and reefer door seal, and a passenger car and commercial vehicle door rubber weatherstrip, data can predict when the seal will need replacement.
The data inputs include: age of the seal, number of door cycles, environmental conditions, fuel consumption trends, HVAC runtime, and cargo temperature. When combined, these inputs build a picture of seal health. A machine learning model can predict when the seal is likely to fail.
For a box truck door seal, the model looks at the truck's age, the climate it operates in, and the fuel economy trend. If fuel economy drops, the seal may be failing.
For a shipping container door weatherstrip, the model looks at how many years the container has been in service, the climate, and any reported water damage.
For a refrigerated truck and reefer door seal, the model looks at reefer runtime and temperature stability. If the reefer works harder, the gasket may be leaking.
For a passenger car and commercial vehicle door rubber weatherstrip, the model looks at the vehicle age and customer complaints.
The benefit is that you replace the seal exactly when needed. Not too early, not too late. You do not waste money on seals that still have life. You do not wait for a failure.
The cost is the data infrastructure. But for a large fleet, the savings justify it.
The takeaway is that predictive maintenance is the future. The EPDM weatherstrip will not be replaced on a schedule. It will be replaced when the data says so.
